What Is Bioenvironmental Engineering?
Bioenvironmental Engineers utilize engineering principles and the physical, chemical and biological sciences to prevent and solve environmental problems related to human activities.
Program Mission for Bioenvironmental Engineering
The mission of the Bioenvironmental Engineering Program is to provide students with a broad and thorough education in bioenvironmental engineering fundamentals, applications, and design so as to prepare graduates for the practice of bioenvironmental engineering at the professional level with confidence and skills necessary to meet the technical and social challenges of the future and for continuing their studies at the graduate level.
In pursuit of this mission, within the first few years on the job graduates will have met the following Program Educational Objectives (POE's):
- Practice environmental engineering or pursue advanced degrees with
- Competently and efficiently collect, analyze and interpret data relevant to problems in the environmental engineering sectors
- Demonstrate methodological and computational skills to operate effectively within the environmental engineering sectors.
- Demonstrate skills in current technologies and fundamentals to be able to adapt to future challenges.
- Conduct themselves responsibly, professionally and ethically in their
- Function and skillfully communicate complex issues orally and in writing, individually and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Be ethical and professional in performance of their duties.
- Continue the process of life-long learning.
- Acting as leaders in applying the global and societal benefits of environmental engineering solutions consistent with the principles of sustainability in the community.
To expedite the achievement of these objectives, Graduates of the program will have demonstrated that they have attained the following Student Outcomes (SO's):
- an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
- an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
- an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
- an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
- an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
- an ability to communicate effectively
- the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
- a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
- a knowledge of contemporary issues
- an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
Bioenvironmental Engineering students take basic engineering courses and physical, chemical and biological science classes in their freshman and sophomore years. In the junior and senior years these fundamentals are applied for multidisciplinary problem solving in various environmental fields.

Bioenvironmental Engineers are employed in the following areas:
- Engineering consulting firms
- Drinking water, wastewater, solid waste and air pollution treatment facilities
- Manufacturing industries
- Environmental regulatory and planning agencies
- Research laboratories
- International development agencies
- Public-interest groups
Bioenvironmental Engineering is a program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET resulting in preparation for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and licensure as a Professional Engineer
